First Aid, Lifeguard & Instructor Training

If you are looking to become a lifeguard or swim instructor, Calgary JCC is the place for you! The JCC can run the entire certification course for individuals who are working towards their lifesaver goals. We run one bronze class on a seasonal basis and if enough interest if shown we can offer the national lifeguard or lifesaving swim instructor certification courses.

The following is the Paperny Family JCC's refund policy for all sessional courses:
· Up to 10 days prior to the start of the program a 10% administration fee will be applied to individuals looking to withdraw.
· Within 10 days to the program start date a 25% administration fee will be applied to individuals looking to withdraw.
· Candidates will have an option to leave a full credit on their account which can be applied to any facility programming. The credit must be used within one year.
· If the program has started, the Paperny Family JCC does not offer refunds or credits without a valid reason.
· No prorating is available for absences during programs or services.

Bronze Medallion & CPR C Ages 13+

Challenges participants both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Participants acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification (need not be current).

Intermediate First Aid & CPR

With first aid and CPR training, candidates will become part of the chain of survival. Candidates will learn the most up to date CPR training. We have dedicated instructors that teach through various methods to make the course fun and informative.

Bronze Cross Ages 13+

Designed for participants who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. Includes a timed 400m swim.

Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion and Intermidate First Aid.

National Lifeguard Ages 15+

Recognized as the standard for lifeguards in Canada, NL training develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and mature and responsible attitude toward the role of lifeguarding. This six-day program develops basic skills, principles, and decision-making processes to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatics facilities and emergencies.

Prerequisites: Current Intermidate First Aid and CPR level C, Bronze Cross, and 15+ years of age.

National Lifeguard Recertification Ages 15+

This recertification class allows for lifeguards to be evaluated and demonstrate their skills to ensure they are meeting the Lifesaving Society standards and will be able to provide proper rescue techniques in emergency situations.

Lifesaving and Swim Instructor

Swim instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life® and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. This course prepares instructors to apply Level 1 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach swimming and lifesaving, water rescue education, and are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Distinction, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs.

Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, current Alberta workplace approved Standard First Aid and minimum 15 years years of age.

First Aid Intructor

First Aid instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Lifesaving First AId programs. This course prepares instructors to apply Level 1 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach swimming and lifesaving, water rescue education, and are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in Lifesaving First Aid courses including Basic and Intermediate First Aid.

Prerequisites: Lifesaving Instructor Current Alberta workplace approved Standard First Aid and minimum 15 years years of age.

National Lifeguard Instructor

National Lifeguard Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the National Lifeguard programs. This course prepares instructors to apply Level 3 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach and evaluatate lifeguarding skills and judgmenet.

Prerequisites:National Lifeguard Certification and Lifesaving Instructor.
